Before You Go
Visa Application
Ugandan citizens need a Chinese visa. Apply at the Chinese Embassy in Kampala with:
- Valid passport (6+ months validity)
- Completed visa application form
- Passport photos
- Invitation letter from Chinese business contact or hotel booking
- Bank statement (last 3 months)
- Processing time: 4–7 business days
Flights
Direct flights from Entebbe to Guangzhou are available on China Southern Airlines (approximately 12 hours). Alternatively, connect through Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), Nairobi (Kenya Airways), or Dubai (Emirates).
Budget: $600–$1,200 round trip depending on season and booking time.
Accommodation
- Budget: $30–$50/night for clean business hotels near wholesale markets.
- Mid-range: $60–$120/night for international chain hotels.
- Book near your primary market to save on transportation time.
During Your Trip
Market Visits
- Plan 2–3 markets per day maximum — they're enormous and exhausting.
- Bring a notebook and phone for photos and notes.
- Carry cash (CNY) for samples and deposits.
- Dress professionally — first impressions matter.
Communication
- Download WeChat and Google Translate before arriving.
- Get a local SIM card at the airport ($10–$20 for data plan).
- Many market vendors speak basic English, but a translator dramatically improves negotiations.
Food & Culture
- Try local Cantonese cuisine — it's excellent and affordable.
- Tipping is not customary in China.
- Respect local customs and be patient with cultural differences.
